5-piece guitar band Pastel, or in other words the saviours of guitar music.
Signed to Manchester's independent label 'Spirit Of Spike Island'. The lads released their first EP 'Deeper Than Holy' on October 6th 2021. Produced by J. Fender (Afflecks Palace) and mixed by James Kenosha.
The band's success and profile have been growing rapidly since featuring in Pretty Green's Autumn / Winter 21 collection campaign and hitting number 1 on the UK vinyl charts. This is just the start for them.
The EP opens with 'Deeper Than Holy', the first song Manchester cousins Jack Yates and James Yates have completely written together. The track opens with a slow pulsating bass line that hooks you from the start and continues to build into a wall of sound driven by
a guitar riff which is reminiscent of the band's influences but simultaneously sounds new and exciting. This is complimented with anthemic lyrics which are delivered with the self-assurance of an effortlessly cool frontman. This sets the tone for the rest of the EP.Next up is "Blu" the second single to have been released from the EP, which was accompanied with a music video filmed at Hough End playing fields in Manchester by the iconic filmmaker and photographer Charlie Lightening. The band's musicianship and creativity are further evidenced here producing a groove that picks you up and won't put you down until the end. It's impossible not to be moving by this point.
'Where We Go' is my personal favourite a sunny kaleidoscope of happiness that puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it. Making me dream of summer and good times with friends. The closing track 'Run Rabbit Run' has all of the above ingredients and a verse, "I've been waiting for something to happen and I don't know what it is." This echoes with all of us except by now you start to realise that it is happening, this is it, this is the beginning of something.
This is a band that excites you, they look like a band, a band you would want to be in, they can play, they can write an anthem and they have the confidence of youth yet still make you feel that you could be part of their gang. "Saviours of Guitar Music" well it's a bold statement but based on this EP, why not, this is the most exciting band to have emerged for a decade with their own sound and identity. Embrace them and be excited!
